Are you old enough to remember these shows? If you are–well–that means you’re seasoned!
I have been amazed by how many syndicated shows kids watch! The images presented to us through the media has changed. The choices and values today do not align with what many of us believe to be considered respectable. Sad to say, some of what I know about both of these shows are questionable as well.
If adults get confused by TV images, behaviors, choices, and values–what are our kids thinking? A friend once asked me to “Think about what you are thinking about!” It seemed like a weird request at first–but I did it. I realized my mind thinks about a lot of things: what I’m working on, what I’ve got coming up, random past experiences, and scenes from previously watched shows–to name a few.
What are our kids thinking about? How many random thoughts are going through their heads? What recent television scenes are stuck in their minds?
We have the ability to influence our children’s choices, behaviors, and activities. Let’s teach our children to watch TV wisely: Select quality shows that are age-appropriate, and leave behind most of the junk which can damage our values and beliefs.
Rather than stressing what we “forbid,” let’s stress what we desire they watch–uplifting or illuminating shows that we can watch and discuss together.
A great supplement to a TV diet is a “heaping helping” of books. Let your child select books to read. Read books together. Lovely‘s story is a great one! Discuss her challenges and solutions. What was Lovely thinking about? How can we be proactive in our world the way she is proactive in hers?
